One of the newly selected 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is one of Yucatan Peninsula’s most important Mayan cities. Chichen Itza underwent two periods of grandeur. The first was between the 6th and 9th centuries A.D., and the second, when the Toltecs moved from Mexico’s central highlands into the region in the 10th century and melded their culture with that of the Maya.
